Community Prevention

Everyone can work together to create an environment where underage drinking and binge drinking are not the norms of the community.

What you can do to prevent alcohol abuse in your community:

FOR YOUTH...

  • Plan ahead - Know what you are going to say when peers pressure you to drink
  • Learn about the dangers of alcohol abuse and underage drinking
  • Encourage your friends to choose not to drink
  • Encourage friends who have been drinking to refrain from driving
  • Make good choices - riding in a vehicle with someone who drinks and drives is not one of them
  • Explain to your friends that alcohol is not allowed if you plan to have a party

FOR PARENTS...

  • SUPPORT YOUR TEENS AND GIVE THEM SPACE TO GROW:
  • Set clear rules about alcohol use and enforce them
  • Know where they are, what they are doing, and who their friends are
  • Encourage their independence, but set appropriate limits
  • Make it easy for them to share information about their lives
  • Find ways for them to be involved in family life
  • TALK WITH YOUR TEENS ABOUT ALCOHOL USE:
  • Teach them about the dangers of underage drinking and alcohol abuse
  • Discuss the laws about underage drinking
  • Make your expectation clear that your teens will not drink
  • Listen to them and respect what they say
  • HELP YOUR TEENS MAKE GOOD DECISIONS ABOUT ALCOHOL:
  • Teach them how to resist alcohol
  • Help them find ways to have fun without alcohol
  • Refrain from providing teens with alcohol
  • Help them avoid dangerous situations such as riding in a car with a drunk driver
  • Help them get professional help if you are worried about their involvement

FOR ADULTS...

  • Be a positive role model
  • Avoid binge drinking
  • Refuse to supply alcohol to anyone under the age of 21
  • Keep your alcohol in a secure location so youth do not have access
  • Use a designated driver or cab service if you drink
  • Ask retailers to move alcohol advertisements and products away from youth friendly items such as candy, gum, toys or juice

FOR THE COMMUNITY...

  • Support and reward teens who choose not to drink
  • Enforce and publicize penalties for breaking the rules/laws
  • Use alcohol management best practices at community events to prevent underage drinking and binge drinking
