at Higher Rate than National Average

According to the Center for Disease Control, the average national adult binge drinker consumes four to five drinks per occasion however, a Wisconsinite binge drinker exceeds this and typically consumes nine drinks per occasion.  When compared to the national binge drinking rate (17%), Fond du Lac County’s binge drinking rate (42%) is elevated.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 grams percent or above.  Approximately more than one in every three Fond du Lac County residents participates in binge drinking.  Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States.  Although binge drinking is a nationwide problem, what can we do to solve this locally?

First we can define what binge drinking is: four or more drinks for a woman in two hours or five or more drinks for a man in two hours.

It is important to note that everyone can aid in the prevention of binge drinking.  Members of your community have already begun to move forward by implementing effective strategies to prevent binge drinking through Drug Free Communities (DFC) of Fond du Lac County. DFC has built partnerships with law enforcement, health care, and other agencies in efforts to reduce binge drinking. In addition, other youth action groups including Students Taking Action Against Negative Decisions (STAAND) are also taking action. The STAAND group from Fond du Lac has worked with businesses associated with Prom to remind this season’s prom attendees not to drink.

Alternately, here are a few tips to keep in mind that one can use to help prevent themselves from binge drinking.

  • Don’t drink
  • Being aware the consequences
  • Knowing what triggers binge drinking, and avoiding/preparing for these triggers
  • Drink slowly and be aware of what a “standard drink” really is
  • Start by drinking a soda or other non alcoholic drinks
  • Go out with a friend who doesn’t drink or who has similar low limits in mind
  • Limit the amount of cash you bring out and leave your credit card at home
  • Remember that drinking is not a competition, nor is it a way to look cool
  • Resist pressure from others around you

With your help, as a community, the binge drinking rate of Fond du Lac County can be reduced and many of its outcomes such as unplanned pregnancies, assaults, drunk driving and more can be prevented.
